Son Of Damme Carving

Hi folks. I’m Dave Van Damme, working out of North East Victoria, Australia. I’ve worked as a 3D artist and software developer for years. The biggest issue I’ve always struggled with is when the power turns off, or the software is no longer supported, the art disappears. Physical art though, it stays around for a long time, with no input required to just exist. That’s really cool. So here I present my contribution.

What started out with scrap wood and pallets….

MC Escher did a drawing of 2 hands drawing each other. One day I wondered if I could carve something similar. I had some scrap lying around that was big enough and worked on it for a couple of days. It wasn’t the first thing I’ve carved, but it was right at the beginning.

Ive made hands in every artistic discipline Ive tried – 3d modelling and digital painting had the most. But a wood sculpt is far trickier and satisfying. Cut off too much, or break a piece and salvaging it, or trying to modify the design becomes the main task. There’s no undo, or revert to saved when every cut impacts every future cut…. That challenge makes it far more engrossing.

Services

Now, I still use scrap wood, but Ive learnt a bit about timber types. I have access to a community club mill, and we source fallen trees from the region I live in. That means I can use beautiful pieces of Japanese Elm, or Silky Oak, or Camphor Laurel.

These trees come out of neighbours backyards after they break in storms, or off farms within 50km of where I live. So being able to use these sources to make something beautiful is deeply pleasing. I know plenty of furniture makers, and often the pieces I’ll pick to sculpt with would be junk to them, and burnt as firewood.

Wood is a fantastic material, so Im always on the lookout for an interesting piece to make something beautiful with.
